Activists Put Spotlight on China’s Infringement of Human Rights at Osaka G20

As the G20 summit was in full swing in Osaka on Friday, June 28, with leaders and ministers from 20 countries holding multilateral discussions on the digital economy and world trade, a number of international organizations held side events to bring to the fore other concerns.

Multiple organizations spoke up regarding the infringement of human rights in China, among them the treatment of the Uyghur minority in China’s western Xinjiang region, also called East Turkestan and Uyghurstan. News reports indicate as many as three million ethnic Uyghurs have been forcibly interned in indoctrination camps resembling ethnic concentration camps.

In a press conference, Rebiya Kadeer, the president of the Free Indo-Pacific Alliance and tireless activist for the rights of the Uyghur minority in China, spoke almost in tears about how China’s infringement of human rights needs to be stopped, saying, “Nowhere in the world is there such a terrible situation.”

Writer tried behind closed doors as "national separatist", pending sentence

On April 4, 2019, Mr. Lhamjab A. Borjigin, a 75-year old Mongolian writer, was tried behind closed doors in central Southern (Inner) Mongolia’s Shiliin-hot Municipality on charges of “national separatism,” “sabotaging national unity” and engaging in “illegal publication and illegal distribution.” The court has not yet issued its final verdict.
“The trial started at 9:00 AM, April 4 and ended around 12:00 PM at the Shiliin-hot Municipality People’s Court,” Lhamjab told the Southern Mongolian Human Rights Information Center (SHMRIC) via a recorded audio statement. He added: “none of my family members were allowed to attend. I was denied the right to bring my lawyer to defend myself.”

“The court reluctantly allowed me to bring a Mongolian-Chinese interpreter with me as I refused to speak in Chinese during the court proceedings,” Lhamjab stated. OVERVIEW
Southern Mongolia, known as ‘Inner Mongolia’ within the People’s Republic of China (PRC), geographically encompasses not only the Chinese ‘Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region’ (IMAR) but also large parts of other areas within China where Mongolian people have been living for centuries. ‘Southern’ translates as ‘Uvur’ in the Mongolian language, and refers to the areas south as well as west of the great Gobi Desert. On the other hand, the term ‘Inner’ is a translation of the Chinese word ‘Nei’, and this has had a long-standing effect on the history of the region. This is because through naming Southern Mongolia the ‘Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region’, the Chinese authorities are able to portray a false image that it has always been within China and an integral part of the country.
